Designed to assist the British in enforcing trade laws, these documents allowed British soldiers to enter, search, and seize warehouses, private homes, and ships whenever necessary.
In a combined effort during the fall of French and American forces trapped the British southern army under the command of Cornwallis at Yorktown, Virginia. Forcing colonists to house British soldiers in their homes infuriated the population.
The same year passage of the Quartering Act imposed essentially a tax in kind by requiring the colonists to provide British military units with housing, provisions, and transportation. It was, instead, a series of events that led to the war.
